In a colourful and culturally rich ceremony held on Sunday, October 11, 2025, the people of Ofose-Korlenya in the Dorm Division of the Manya Krobo Traditional Area in the Eastern Region witnessed the grand outdooring of their new queen mother, Manye Tekperkie IV, known in private life as Matilda Akuyo Kudjo.

She succeeded Manye Tekperkie III who died more than three decades ago
Manye Tekperkie IV, a Data Entry Clerk at the Dodowa Health Research Centre in the Greater Accra Region, swore the traditional oath of allegiance to the Dorm Manye (Divisional Queen mother of Dorm), signifying her official acceptance of the stool and her readiness to serve her people.

In her inaugural address, Manye Tekperkie IV expressed deep gratitude to the chiefs and elders for the honour bestowed upon her, pledging to serve the women, youth, and entire community with dedication and humility.

“I’ve accepted the title of queen mother in good faith. The women and youth can come to me with their problems, and I’ll work with them to find solutions. My goal is to foster love, unity, and development in our community,” she said.

Chief of Ofose-Korlenya, Nene Nomo Abui III, described the new queen mother as the “mother of the community,” emphasising her vital role in uniting women and supporting the chief’s developmental agenda.

“She can’t do it alone, so the community must support her and contribute financially and morally toward our shared progress. My advice to her is to remain steadfast and committed to her responsibilities,” he added.

Guest speaker, Ogya Ohye Amono, Nana Dr Akwetey Gyamfi I, Nkabomhene of Okorase-Akuapem in the Eastern Region, commended the people of Dorm for upholding Krobo traditions, urging them to take pride in their heritage and indigenous names.

“Krobo is ours. Our names make us unique everywhere we go. Let’s name our children with indigenous Krobo names to keep our culture alive. Leadership is difficult, but if she remains resolute and inclusive, she’ll succeed,” he advised.

Adding his voice, Nene Sipim Narh Tekpertey, Sipim of Manya-Aklomuase, urged the people to rally behind the new queen mother.

“She needs the support of everyone. No leader succeeds alone. With collective effort, she can transform the community,” he emphasised.

Historical Context of the Dorm Division

The Dorm Division is one of the key traditional divisions within the Manya Krobo Traditional Area, which has its capital at Odumase-Krobo.

The Krobo people, belonging to the Dangme-speaking ethnic group, trace their origins to the Okwenya Mountain, where their ancestors first settled centuries ago before migrating to the plains. Dorm, like other divisions such as Yonguase, Akuse, and Manya-Aklomuase, plays a significant role in the chieftaincy structure of Manya Krobo.

Historically, the Dorm Division has been noted for its strong communal spirit, agricultural productivity, and deep cultural values. Queen mothers in the area, known as “Manye,” are highly respected figures who serve as custodians of women’s welfare, promoters of cultural preservation, and key contributors to local governance and development.

The installation of Manye Tekperkie IV, therefore, marks not just a continuation of tradition but also a renewal of commitment to unity and community advancement. Her leadership is expected to bring fresh energy to local development initiatives, women’s empowerment, and the preservation of Krobo heritage.

As the Obonu drums faded and the kpalongo dancers dispersed, the people of Ofose-Korlenya expressed optimism that under her stewardship, Dorm will continue to thrive — blending tradition, unity, and modern progress for generations to come.
