Man arrested for allegedly threatening to kill grandmother dies in police custody

A young man, identified as Kwaku, a resident of Techiman in the Tano North district of the Ahafo region, died while in police custody.

Police arrested Kwaku for allegedly threatening to kill his grandmother.

Reporting the incident on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Nana Kwame who is a correspondent in the region stated that Kwaku had consistently threatened his grandmother’s life. Kwaku accused her of refusing to use her influence to support him.

The reporter said Kwaku had complained that his grandmother possessed influence and knew several wealthy relatives abroad. His several appeals to her to connect him to some of them proved futile.

He stated that the grandmother, who felt unsafe, reported the threats to the police, following which the young man was arrested.

Nana Kwame further reported that police allegedly assaulted Kwaku while he was in custody.

Police later found Kwaku shivering in the cells and rushed him to the hospital, but he could not survive.

The deceased’s family demanded an investigation into the circumstances leading to Kwaku’s death.
