Madina-Zongo bakers take fire safety for granted

The Madina West Unit Committee, under the La-Nkwantanang-Madina Municipality, on Saturday, undertook an inspection tour of the bakeries in area to check for fire extinguishers, which could minimise the consequences of fire outbreaks.

Only one, out of the 12 Bakeries visited at the Madina-Zongo, UN, Libya Quarters, Washington and Redco Flats, has a fire extinguisher although all the facilities use Liquefied Petroleum Gas for baking.

The visit follows a recent workshop, organised for the members by the La-Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly (LaNMMA) to equip them with the requisite knowledge to ensure their effectiveness.

The three-member inspection team, led by Mr. Abu Abdul Ganew, would, therefore, forward their report to the Madina National Fire Service so that the proprietors of the bakeries would be educated on fire safety and the appropriate extinguishers to acquire.

Mr. Yakubu Ibrahim and Madam Zubaida Osman are the other members of the team.

The Ghana News Agency learnt that bakers using fire wood need water to extinguish their out of control fires, while those using petrol or kerosene need a chemical foam compound or dry powder to extinguish bad fires.

Fires caused by Liquefied Petroleum Gas are also extinguished with dry chemical powder.
