In a commendable effort to promote safety among his constituents, particularly those residing along the Black Volta, Lawyer Bede A Ziedeng, Member of Parliament for the Lawra constituency today presented 20 life jackets to six communities along the black Volta in honor of a promise he made to the people.
The move seeks to halt or reduce canoe/boat accidents among travelers crossing the black Volta River at various points in the Lawra municipality which sometimes result in lost of lives, with the recent disaster involving some six students of the Lawra Senior High School.
Speaking at a short ceremony today to hand over the life jackets at Dikpe, the MP bemoaned the lost of lives and attributed the situation to lack of life jackets for travelers crossing the River.
“We regret all the boat incidents, particularly those involving the death of our Brothers and sisters. This issue is of grave concern to the government. That is why it was discussed in parliament. So I have taken the pain to look for resources to support travelers who cross the Black Volta on daily basis. Today’s gesture is not the last as we work hard to find a lasting solution to the problem”.
While acknowledging the efforts of previous governments to construct a bridge across the Black Volta, Ziedeng expressed concerns over the lack of commitment by the erstwhile Nana Addo led government to ensure the completion of the bridge project that was awarded in 2020.
“I acknowledge the efforts of the past government. The then president, Nana Addo cut sod for the construction of a bridge across the Balack Volta here at Dikpe in 2020. Unfortunately, there was no commitment and no work was carried out since to sod was cut.”
The MP pledged to collaborate with the ministry roads to ensure the construction of a bridge across the river to find a lasting solution to the problem.
He appealed his constituents to have confidence in the Mahama led government and called on the beneficiary communities to make good use of the life jackets.
Present at the ceremony were member of the Lawra Municipal Security Council, chief and other opinion leaders.
