MP calls for reconstruction of Kumasi Central Market

Mr Isaac Osei, Member of Parliament (MP) for Subin, has called for bold action to reconstruct the Kumasi Central Market, to end the frequent fire outbreaks and destruction of traders’ wares.

The MP appealed to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to link up with government to implement the decision to rebuild the market, something he said had been on the drawing board for some time now.

Mr Osei made the appeal after visiting part of the market that has been ravaged by fire last Sunday evening.

The MP said that he had made a statement on the floor of Parliament about the recurrence of fire disasters at the market and the need to reconstruct it into a modern structure.

Mr. Osei sympathized with the victims, and advised them to undertake insurance policy to ameliorate the suffering in times of disasters that often hit the market.

He appealed to the National Disaster Management Organization and the Medium and Small Loans Centre to support the affected traders to restart their businesses.

The fire, which started at about 2030 hours on Sunday, was smoldering when the MP visited the market on Tuesday, and Mr Osei asked fire fighters to make sure that it was completely put out.
