Lower Manya Krobo MP underscores importance of women in procreation amidst LGBTQ+ debate

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Lower Manya Krobo in the Eastern Region has stressed the importance of women in procreation to ensure the continuation of humanity.

Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, delivering a message to mothers in his constituency on Sunday, May 12, 2024, as part of this year's Mother's Day celebration, said the continued existence of humanity could not occur without men and women coming together, adding that suggestions for legalizing LGBTQ+ activities were therefore improper.

"We're here today due to the union between a man and a woman, so if somebody is telling us today that a man should marry a man and a woman should marry a woman, that person is evil and doesn't want the progress of this country," the MP said.

Adding that President Mahama will sign the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill into law if voted into power, the lawmaker said, "In order for us to multiply as demanded by the Bible, President Mahama, who has both Muslim and Christian backgrounds and is well brought up, has said the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill being challenged by President Akufo-Addo will be signed into law."

The MP, in a Mother's Day message, stressed the need to celebrate mothers.

Describing Ghanaian women, particularly those in Lower Manya Krobo, as special, the legislator said women occupied a special place in the hearts of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), adding that the party would continue to support and empower them.

Outlining some infrastructural interventions he has undertaken over the years, the Member of Parliament mentioned healthcare facilities, satellite markets, and educational infrastructure, among others, as notable projects undertaken by him and the NDC government while in power.

Mr. Terlabi praised President Mahama's choice of selecting Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for the 2024 general elections, as this is to champion the cause of women.

He accused his main opponent in the December parliamentary primaries, who is the current Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area and the NPP government of achieving very little for the people of Lower Manya Krobo during their eight-year term.

Constituency chairman John Atter Matey said the occasion was an appropriate opportunity to celebrate women due to the special place they occupy in humanity.

"We in the NDC have taken it upon ourselves to celebrate our mothers and our sisters because everybody who's living on earth is born of a woman, and the NDC believes that women are special and it takes a man and a woman to procreate. That is the reason why we're celebrating women today," he said.

He urged the women to persevere and continue to strive hard, even in the midst of the current economic challenges confronting the country.

The Lower Manya Krobo Constituency women organizers of the NDC joined the celebration, which saw the attendance of a number of women from the constituency.

As part of the event, the women were taken through a rigorous health screening exercise led by Dr. Winfred Baah, a consultant physician at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
