Library is a partner in sustainable development - Mrs. Amissah-Arthur

The Wife of the Vice President, Mrs.Matilda Amissah-Arthur, has reminded the librarians that though Agenda 2030 is universal, each country is responsible for developing and implementing national strategies to achieve them.

Mrs. Amissah-Arthur, says the library is a partner in sustainable development hence the need for librarians to take the initiative here in Ghana.

She made the remarks at the Ghana Library Association biennial Congress and General Annual meeting at the Balm Library in Accra.

The Congress considered the role of libraries and librarians in the realization of the United Nations 2030 Agenda in Africa.

The Wife of the Vice President, Mrs.Matilda Amissah-Arthur, described librarians as original search engines and formidable partners in facilitating access to reliable and useful information in the attainment of the agenda. The United Nations 2030 Agenda is a plan of action captured in 17 Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, and 169 targets, that seek to build on the achievements of the Millennium Development Goals.

Librarians from African countries have been discussing, the role of the library in the realization of the SDGs. On the theme: Libraries and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Ghana, the focus of the 2016 biennial Congress and General Annual Meeting of the Ghana Library Association, GLA, was to deliberate on how to position and align public and community libraries in Ghana with government priorities and community needs in addressing the SDGs.
