La-Nkwantanang-Madina regent clears air on disputed land

Accra, May 27, GNA - The Regent of La-Nkwantanang-Madina Traditional Area, Nii Nikoi Jonas has said that the disputed parcel of land at Madina Zongo Junction legally belongs to the people of La-Nkwantanang.

He said no individual or group can claim ownership of the parcel of land, insisting that the people of La-Nkwantanang, descendants of Nii Kotey Amli, the Warrior King of La Kranaa are the true owners of the disputed land at Madina Zongo Junction in Accra.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, Nii Nikoi said the disputed land falls within the jurisdiction of the traditional area.

With documental evidence, the regent explained that the land was secured by Nii Amli, the founder of La Nkwantanang, which was bequeathed to his descendants and forms part of the La-Kranaa lands.

He said: "La-Nkwantanang extends from La right down to Pantang, shares boundary on the east with Ashalley Botwe, Ogbojo, Bejin (Teshie Village), Adentan, shares boundary with Abla Adjei, Ashongman, Agbogba, Haatso, Papao and Dzorwulu.

"To the North, it shares boundary with Pantang to the South, shares boundary with La."

He said the present site occupied by the current Madina Township belongs to the La Kranaa quarter with records to testify, that no one can claim to be the owner of any piece of land at Madina.

Nii Nikoi added that a court action in 2004 ruled in favour of the La-Nkwantanang Community against the Government for giving out portions of the land for other projects.

"The court ruled in favour of the La-Nkwantanang Community and the land was returned to the community. Details of the judgment are available and can be verified courts."

On May 17, there was a demonstration in Madina which led to a section of the youth destroying property at the Madina Faith Baptist Church and assaulting two police officers.

A five member committee has since been tasked to investigate the actions that led to the communal violence at the school.
