Kyireponi residents raise red flag over fuel stations

Minister of Environment, Science and Innovation, Mr. Mahama Ayariga Minister of Environment, Science and Innovation, Mr. Mahama Ayariga

Residents at Kyireponi in the Northern Region have raised red flags over the citing of fuel stations in the area. Government after the June 3 disaster embarked on an operation to demolish fuel stations cited at locations without the issuance of license by appropriate regulatory authorities to operate.

The Minister of Environment, Science and Innovation (MESTI), Mr Mahama Ayariga, a week after the disaster, led a team to demolish some filling stations perceived to be on watercourses or operating without licence.

The NPA in 2015 placed a moratorium on the construction of fresh petrol stations until further notice.

However, the nationwide demolition exercise seems to have fallen on rocks. Our regional correspondent, Prince Kwame Tamakloe in a report filed on Nyankonton Mu Nsem said, residents in the region are currently expressing fear and panic over the dangers of such fuel stations in the area.

They claim, the fuel stations are cited on waterways, market locations and areas highly populated with human activities.

Some of the fuel stations he noted, have people operation food joints and other trading activities, a situation he stressed could trigger disaster any time soon.
