Kwahu South Assembly receives first quarter of Common Fund

Mpraeso (E/R), Sept. 3, GNA - The Kwahu South District Assembly received GHC 140,028.67 as its share of the District Assembly Common Fund for the first quarter of the year. Mr Joseph Omari, District Chief Executive (DCE), announced this at the first ordinary meeting of the first session of the assembly at Mpraeso on Thursday.

He said the assembly was able to mobilize GHC 138,809.41 from its internally generated funds as at the end of July this year, representing 72.23 percent of the targeted annual revenue, to finance a number of development projects in the area.

Mr Omari mentioned some of the projects as the construction of foot bridges at Mpraeso, rehabilitation of hand dug wells at Obo, Mpraeso-Akropong, Bepong and Ntomem to provide portable water to the people, as well as the rehabilitation of a building for the Tweneduraese community clinic. Other projects included the rehabilitation of markets, feeder roads, a guest house, classroom blocks and the construction of a semi- detached bungalow to provide accommodation for the assembly's staff. He announced measures being take by the assembly to help maximize revenue generation.

This, Mr Omari said, included the formation of revenue tax force, enforcement of fee fixing resolution and prosecution of defaulters among others. '

The DCE said the assembly had been selected to participate in the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) Local Service Delivery and Governance Programme. He said that would help the assembly to benefit from a GHC 240,000 grant for the construction of its Works Department, procurement of office equipment and logistics, improvement in rural road network and provision of rural water and sanitation to enhance development in the district.

Mr Omari said 583 people had so far been employed under the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) in the Youth in Agriculture, Health Extension, Teaching Assistance and the urban plantation programme.

He said GHC 124,230 had been deducted from the assembly's common fund for the payment of salaries for the first six months of the year. Mr Omari commended the assembly members, the administration and management staff for their co-operation and assistance since he assumed office. He urged the assembly members to continue to hold regular meetings with the people in their electoral areas and articulate their concerns and problems to the assembly for solution. The Presiding Member, Mr Frank Ofosu Kissi, appealed to the assembly members to co-operate and assist revenue collectors to mobilize adequate revenue in their electoral areas, to supplement their share of the common fund to finance more development projects in the communities. 3 Sept 09
