Kwaebibirem Assembly to build bungalow for best Teachers

Kade (E/R), Oct 7, GNA - The Kwaebibirem District Assembly will build a bungalow for any school that will produce the best teacher in the district this year.

The District Chief Executive, Mr Yaw Yiadom-Boakye, said similar facility would be provided in succeeding years to encourage teachers to give of their best.

Speaking at the district's celebration of World Teachers Day at Kade on Monday, Mr Yiadom-Boakye said the best teacher would occupy the premises as long as he or she remained at post.

He said to resolve the problem of inadequate trained teachers, the assembly has been sponsoring qualified SSCE/GCE "O" level students to pursue courses at training colleges.

The first batch of 51 trainees has completed their courses and is being posted to schools in the district.

Sixty-eight other trainees are in school and that the assembly has set aside enough resources to sponsor as many as 180 trainees. So far 98.4 million cedis has been spent on the programme.

On Science, Technology and Mathematics Education, Mr Yiadom-Boakye said last year the assembly sponsored 100 pupils at the cost of 18.5 million cedis while it sponsored 150 of them this year at the cost of 25 million cedis.

The District Director of Education, Mr Charles Twumasi-Ankrah, called for clothing allowance of at least 10 per cent of teachers' salaries to make them appear decent.

He also suggested that teachers should be placed on "Cap 30" to enable them to earn good pensions as against the SSNIT pension.
