Residents of Kwabenya-Point 2 in the Greater Accra Region have vowed to go after armed robbers, whom they say are making life difficult for them in the area.

Class FM’s Regina Borley-Bortey visited the community and reports that recent attacks by the robbers have heightened fears among residents, with many of them staying indoors after 9pm.

Samuel Kwarteng, a member of the neighbourhood vigilante team, said: “The other time, they (robbers) butchered one young man and took his phone and money. Another day, they inflicted knife wounds on a lady. Police have been inactive in all of this, so, we have decided to take our destinies into our own hands and deal with the gang. If we let them be, they will cause more harm”.

Responding in an interview, the District Police Commander, Superintendent Victoria Yamoah told Class News that the Police have no knowledge about the attacks, but will intensify surveillance to address the situation if indeed any incidents of such nature had taken place in Kwabenya.

“I don’t know of any incident of that sort…I have no idea. We are always on the ground to patrol. We have motorbike patrols for the day, as well as in the night. We also have a patrol team, which I’m always on board to ensure that the community sleeps peacefully.

“Once you are telling me this, we will send our boys around to gather more information,” Supt. Yamoah said.

The Police commander, however, indicated that they are constrained in fighting crime, as the Division is inadequately resourced.

“We do patrol every night. We have one patrol vehicle and we cannot concentrate here; you have to move to cover the whole jurisdiction, so, definitely we will pass there, but we cannot be at one place,” she explained.
