Kumasi roads to see massive upgrading works

Roads running across the Kumasi Metropolis would soon see massive upgrading works to enhance safety and make things more convenient for the people, Mr Theodore Quaye, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Department of Urban Roads, has said.

He stated that roads covering about 20 kilometres would have bituminous surface treatment with proper markings and signs.

He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the job had already been awarded on contract and expected to start next month.

Mr. Quaye announced that phase two of the expansion works on the Asokwa Interchange would also be tackled in early 2016.

It would involve the extension of the dual carriageway from the Coca Cola Plant to the Kumasi South Hospital at Chirapatre and the lining of the two-kilometre Aboabo stream.

He said the consultants had already finished with the designs and that there would soon be construction bidding.

He touched on the reconstruction of the 11.2 kilometre road stretch from Kejetia to Abuakwa under the “Sunyani Road in Kumasi Project” and said every effort was being made to get affected property owners compensated.

He denied speculations that an interchange with underpasses and a six-lane asphalt concrete surface to be built at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) Roundabout as part of the project, to allow free flow of traffic, had been abandoned.

He said this would be implemented after compensation had been paid to people who were going to lose their property to the project.

Mr. Quaye gave the assurance that selected roads in Asokore-Mampong, Ejisu-Juaben, Konongo, Bekwai and Ejura-Sekyedumase Municipalities would also be improved.
