Krontihene of Akyem Bosome Traditional Area and 15 others arrested

Akim Swedro(E/R), April 6, GNA - The police has arrested 16 people including the Krontihene of Akyem Bosome Traditional Area , Nana Nyantekyi Amponsem, for rioting and disturbing public peace. The suspects were said to have entered the palace of the Omanhene of the Akyem Bosome Traditional Area, Nana Okutwasuo Owrae Agyekum, on Easter Monday to perform customary rites to de-stool the Omanhene and in the process assaulted the Omanhene.

Briefing the press at the Birim South District Security Council meeting at Akim Swedro on Easter Monday, the District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Simpson Abotsi, said the police had information that a group was creating problems at the palace of the Omanhene of Akyem Bosome.

He said when the police got to the scene, there was a huge crowd, so the police personnel called for re-enforcement from the Achiase Jungle Warfare Military Barracks.

ASP Abotse said with the support of the military, the crowd at the palace was dispersed and the 16 suspects were arrested to assist the police in their investigations. He said the Omanhene, Nana Okutwasuo Owrea Agyekum, was taken to the clinic at the Jungle Warfare Barracks for treatment as a result of the attack.

The District Chief Executive of Birim South and Chairman of the District Security Council, Baffour Takyi-Mensah, said calm had been restored and everybody was going about their normal duties in the traditional area. He said some of the police and military personnel were patrolling the sensitive areas of the district to forestall any disturbances. Later, the press in the company of the Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Ahmed Baba-Jamal, briefly met the Omanhene at the Akim Oda Government Hospital where he had been referred for further medical check-up.
