Konongo roads turn death trap

Residents say the roads remain a constant threat to life in the area Residents say the roads remain a constant threat to life in the area

Reports reaching The Publisher indicates that, following the activities of some illegal miners in Konongo, in the Ashanti region, most of the road networks in the area have now become death traps.

The most affected roads include the Akrantie Besa Road and the Odumase Old Zongo road, which are on the main Kumasi/Accra highway.

Checks by the paper indicate that the Akrantie Besa Road is now virtually ‘hanging’ and may cave in soon.

“The Akrantie Besa portion of the same road has gaping holes under underneath, caused by some people who engaged in alluvial mining recently”, one observer noted.

Another person, who also demanded anonymity, said the Odumase Zongo road is in an equally deplorable state and needs immediate attention.

He said some miners had dug large tunnels all over the Konongo Township in search of gold, and that their illegal actions are creating a lot of problems for the people.

Unconfirmed reports say the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, had been informed of the looming danger, and had visited the areas for first-hand information.
