Koforidua Poly to offer Nursing course

The Koforidua Polytechnic will from this year begin offering health courses including Nursing and Healthcare programmes under its newly established Faculty of Health and Allied Sciences (FHAS).

The Faculty was established in 2014 in fulfillment of the strategic Trust One of the 2010/2014 strategic plan of the Institution.

According to the management of Koforidua Polytechnic, “the setting up of the faculty is in line with the National Council for Tertiary Education and the Ministry of Health’s [policy] to increase science related programmes and to ensure access to quality health, nutrition and reproductive services of all people living in Ghana and to promote the development of the local health industry.”

The faculty is set to prepare students in various professions such as Medical Laboratory, Technician, Biomedical Technology, Phlebotomy Technician, Dispensing Technician, Nursing and Home Health Care, Public Health among others with the aim of helping to bridge the gap of health professionals needed in Ghana and the sub-region. Food Technology and Post Harvest Technology are also part of the new programmes added.

Koforidua Polytechnic which was established in 1996 with only two HND programmes now has 19 HND programmes and nine Bachelor of Technology programmes.

The acting Rector of Koforidua Polytechnic Godfred Abledu told Starr News’ Kojo Ansah the new programmess added are not a deviation from the core mandate of the Polytechnic institutions.

He said the training given is distinct from the traditional institutions since it is practical, research and skills development based.
