Kassena Nankana appeals for a district

Navrongo (U/E), Jan 26, GNA - The people of Kassena Nankana District on Thursday reiterated their appeal to the government to give the area another district.

Making the appeal at a People's Assembly in Navrongo, they said they had made the appeal several times but nothing had been done. Reacting to the appeal the District Chief Executive, Mr. Emmanuel Chegeweh, said it would be appropriate to have another district because the five billion cedis allocated to the large district annually were inadequate.

He said even though the area met all the requirements to have another district, there were still problems that had to be solved so as to forestall possible confusion and conflict when a new district was created.

Mr. Chegeweh said the people had not yet agreed on what name should be given to the new district, the location of the district capital and where the new District Chief Executive should come from.

He appealed to the people to be patient and see each other as one people in order to overcome the petty problems.

Mr. Chegeweh said the assembly had made an improvement in its revenue collection with 1.3 billion cedis collected last year as against 485.2 million cedis in 2005.

He said with support from GETFUND, the assembly had built classroom blocks at Pinda, Namolo, Pungu, Biu-Sensa, Manyoro communities. A total of 7,350 dual desks and 500 teachers' tables and chairs have been bought at 1.9 billion cedis to furnish all schools in the district.

Mr. Chegeweh said 89 students sponsored to teacher training colleges graduated last year and are teaching in the district. "Another batch of 79 is in the final year and shall complete soon to add to the number of teachers in the system", he said.
