President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Professor Edward Brenya, a distinguished scholar and policy analyst from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), as the new Chairman of the Governing Council of Kumasi Technical University (KsTU).
The appointment is widely recognized as a strategic move to bolster technical education in the Ashanti Region and is simultaneously being celebrated as a powerful testament to the transformative impact of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Education Fund.
Professor Brenya, an Associate Professor in the Department of History and Political Studies at KNUST, is a direct beneficiary of the Asantehene’s visionary commitment to knowledge development.
His academic journey, including the successful completion of his Master’s and PhD in the United States, was made possible through the prestigious Ohio University scholarship awarded by His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The selection of Professor Brenya underscores the enduring legacy of the Asantehene’s education fund in nurturing and producing high-calibre experts who are now actively occupying critical roles in Ghana’s development landscape.
Professor Brenya brings a wealth of academic and administrative experience to his new role at KsTU. Beyond his teaching and research contributions at KNUST, he currently coordinates the successful Master of Public Administration (MPA) programme at the Institute of Distance Learning.
Crucially, his deep commitment to educational advancement is reflected in his previous administrative capacity as the Administrative Manager of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Education Fund, giving him unique insight into the governance and resource mobilization required for institutional growth.
In his capacity as the new Council Chairman, Professor Brenya is expected to lead KsTU through its next phase of development, focusing on accelerating the university's ambitious transformation agenda. This mandate includes driving significant reforms aimed at enhancing the institution's capacity and relevance.
Key areas of focus identified by the Council Chairman include:
Governance Reform: Strengthening institutional accountability and efficiency.
Research Commercialization: Translating academic findings into viable economic opportunities.
Academic-Industry Collaboration: Deepening partnerships with the private sector to ensure graduates are employment-ready.
Research Productivity: Enhancing the output and quality of scholarly work.
Professor Brenya has emphasized his commitment to positioning KsTU as a leading centre of technical and professional education, not just within Ghana but across the sub-region.
The appointment of Professor Brenya is seen by educational stakeholders as a recognition of his profound expertise and dedication to public service.
"This is a well-deserved recognition for Professor Brenya and a powerful affirmation of the long-term strategic vision of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II," said a source close to the Presidency. "The investment made years ago through the Otumfuo Education Fund is now yielding leaders prepared to guide our crucial technical universities into the future."
Professor Brenya is scheduled to commence his duties immediately, working closely with the management team and stakeholders to implement the institutional roadmap for KsTU.
