KNUST health students offer free medical care

Kumasi, Feb 16, GNA - Health students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) made up of medical students, medical laboratory, pharmacy and dispensing technicians on Monday offered free medical screening to all students on the campus. The exercise was organised under the auspices of the Ghana Society for the Prevention of Tuberculosis and Club Vision Ghana to show love on Valentine's Day.

It was to identify the major communicable diseases like TB and malaria as well as HIV counselling and testing. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency on the rationale behind the exercise, Mr Stephen Boadu-Appiah Jr, Chairman of the organising committee, said the exercise was funded mainly by the Ghana Health Service) and the Ghana AIDS Commission. Ghana Pharmaceutical Association provided drugs.

Mr Boadu-Appiah explained that the main aim of organising the exercise was to redefine love in the context of Valentine and to change the perception of promiscuity and vanity associated with the celebration.

He said by organising the exercise that included other entertainment packages the health students hoped to keep their fellow students on the campus in the hope that the temptation of going out to drink and indulge in immoral activities would be reduced.
