The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is on the verge of a leadership transition.

Sources close to the university administration indicate that a successor to the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rita Akosua Dickson, is expected to be finalized by this Friday.

While eleven distinguished academics applied for the prestigious role at Ghana’s premier science and technology hub, the field will ultimately narrow to a single appointee.

Speculation within the university community is rife, as all candidates reportedly delivered strong performances during their interviews with the Search Committee.

Selection Process:

The Governing Council is scheduled to deliberate on a shortlist of three or four candidates.

Following these deliberations, the Council will select the individual deemed most suitable to lead the institution.

The Search Committee, chaired by the esteemed Justice Sir Dennis Adjei, has reportedly concluded its evaluation.

The committee’s findings and the candidates' performance scores are prepared for presentation to the Governing Council, which holds the final authority in the appointment.

Timeline and Potential Candidates:

Although some rumors suggested an announcement as early as Wednesday evening, the official selection is anticipated by Friday, barring any unforeseen delays.

Several high-profile names are currently circulating as frontrunners for the position, including:

Professor Agyiri

Professor Marian Asantewah Nkansah

Professor Charles Ofosu Marfo

Professor Edward Brenyah

Professor Rexford Assasie-Oppong

Professor Kwabena Britwum Nyarko

Background:

To understand the weight of this appointment, it is helpful to look at how Ghana's public universities are governed.

The Vice-Chancellor (VC) serves as the Chief Academic and Administrative Officer, responsible for the day-to-day management and the strategic vision of the university.

The appointment process typically involves three key bodies:

Search Committee:

An independent body (often including external judicial or academic experts) that vets applications, conducts interviews, and ranks candidates based on a specific rubric.

Governing Council:

The supreme decision-making body of the university.

It includes government appointees, representatives from the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), and members of the Convocation.

They make the final selection based on the Search Committee’s report.

Chancellorship:

While the Chancellor (currently the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II) is the titular head, the Vice-Chancellor is the executive head who executes the university’s mandate.

Professor Rita Akosua Dickson, the incumbent, made history in 2020 as the first female Vice-Chancellor of KNUST.

Her successor will inherit the responsibility of maintaining the institution’s status as a leader in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education within the Sub-Saharan region.
