KNUST SRC cautioned to adopt legitimate approach to address issues

Kumasi, Feb. 5, GNA - The Students' Representative Council (SRC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has been cautioned to ensure decency in their approach to furthering the cause of students.

Professor William Ellis, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the university, who made the call, said such an approach was crucial to sustaining the cordial relationship existing between the university authorities and students.

Speaking at a handing-over ceremony of the Council in Kumasi at the weekend, Prof Ellis said the use of threats, intimidation and ultimatums that had characterised the SRC's approach to addressing issues as a way to resolve impasses in recent time were uncalled for. He called on the SRC to strive to confer with the university authorities to find an amicable solution to impasses to facilitate effective teaching and learning.

"Our doors are always open to the SRC to seek clarification on pressing and disturbing issues", he noted, stressing that the authorities would endeavour to involve the Council at all levels of the decision-making process to enhance academic work.

The pro Vice-Chancellor charged the new executive of the SRC, which has Mr Ebenezer Afram-Asomaning as President, to be selfless, transparent and accountable in their stewardship to boost the development of the university.

Mr David Asante-Boateng, the out-going President of the Council, cited the refurbishment of the SRC office, the introduction of a new drug dispensing policy, construction of 10 bus stop shelters and introduction of the Metro Mass Transport on campus as some feats chalked during his administration.

He said the old administration would continue to collaborate with the new executive in all their endeavours in the interest of the cause of the Council and students.

Mr Afram-Asomaning gave the assurance that his administration would work hard to justify the confidence reposed in them. Other members of the executive include Messrs Faruk Alhassan, Vice-President, Henry Osei-Yaw, Public Relations Officer, Prosper Hoetu, local branch President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Miss Mabel Geraldo, treasurer and Miss Erica Edem Senayah, secretary.
