Hunter grabs IGP’s GHc2,000 for shooting robber

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan, has rewarded the hunter who helped the police to arrest one of the suspected armed robbers in the Asankrangwa robbery incident in the Western Region, with GH¢2,000.

The hunter, Amadu Odinaygo, helped the police to pursue the robbers who had run into the bush after allegedly killing the driver of a Sprinter bus and robbing the passengers on board.

The robbers opened fire on the hunter and he also returned fire and shot one of them, Fatawu Fuseini, a Burkinabe, in the leg.

Last Wednesday, armed robbers allegedly shot and killed a Sprinter bus driver on the Asankrangwa-Manso-Amenfi road in the region.

The driver, Anthony Oppong, 53, was driving a Sprinter bus with registration number AW 1999-14 when he was shot by the robbers.

The bus was carrying passengers from Samreboi in the region to Kumasi when the vehicle was attacked by the robbers around Sureso, near Asankrangwa.

Some of the robbers who attempted to board vehicles to travel to unknown destinations after committing the crime, were arrested by the police upon a tip-off.

Later the police had information that some four persons had been spotted at the robbery scene and when the police got there the alleged robbers started running into the bush, but were given a hot chase far into the bush. One of the suspects was arrested with the aid of the residents.

The rest of them were pursued by the hunter in the area, who knew the terrain very well, in the company of the police and he (hunter) managed to capture one of them.

Presenting the cash to the hunter on behalf of the IGP in Sekondi, DCOP Quainoo, the regional commander, praised the hunter and members of the community for their efforts in assisting the police to arrest the robbers.

He added that investigations were ongoing and soon the arrested robbers would be put before court.

DCOP Quainoo indicated that as part of measures to help prevent the incident from reoccurring, patrol by the police on that stretch of road had been intensified.

He advised drivers to stop travelling early in the morning or late in the night.
