House razed by fire in Techiman

Abourso (B/A), Jan. 25, GNA - A nine-room house was razed by fire at Abourso in Techiman Municipality at the weekend, displacing all the tenants. Property worth more than GHC 5,000 was burnt but there was no causality.

Items lost included refrigerators, cooking utensils, ceiling fans, mattresses, cash, motorbike, foot wear, furniture, television sets and text books.

Opanin Prince Kwarteng, landlord of the house, led officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to assess the damage. He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the fire started at about 0130 hours and that some passers-by on seeing a pall of smoke emitting from the top of one of the rooms raised an alarm.

Opanin Takyi said the fire swept into other rooms when a parked motor bike in the house caught fire and before personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service arrived on the scene, the fire had reached dangerous dimensions.

Mr. Gibreal Kese Labib, Municipal NADMO coordinator, assured the victims that NADMO would provide some relief items towards their rehabilitation. He disclosed that about 28 domestic fires had been recorded in the Municipality between January 2009 and January 2010, displacing more than 230 people. He urged landlords to re-wire their old houses to avoid future mishaps. 25 Jan 10
