Hospital records 55,469 patients within six months

The Saint Theresa’s Catholic Hospital at Nkoranza recorded 55,469 patients between January and June this year.

Out of the figure, 5,188 were patients on admission and 50,281 at the Out-Patient Department (OPD).

Mr Francis Tawiah, Administrator of the hospital, who announced this at a Mid-Year Health Review Performance Meeting at Nkoranza said malaria was the leading case followed by anaemia and rheumatism.

He said 2,134 births were recorded during the period, 1,079 supervised by midwives and nurses, 876 through normal delivery and 179 women through caesarean section while 24 still births were recorded.

Mr Tawiah said 140 abortion cases were recorded as compared to 86 cases last year, 70 teenage pregnancies, three of them between 10 and14 years, and 67 between 15-19 years, while 91 women above 35 years became pregnant.

On HIV, he said the hospital offered Counseling and Testing services to 1,000 people out of which 142 tested positive, while 114 deaths made up of 72 men and 42 women were recorded during the period.

Mr Tawiah said some problems facing the hospital are delays in the reimbursement from the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), inadequate accommodation for staff, non-availability of HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) kits.
