Help the youth to reject violence – FOMWAG

Hajia Yasmeen Appiedu, Ashanti Regional President of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Ghana (FOMWAG), has urged her fellow women to do more to dissuade their children and husbands from intolerance and violence.

They should use their powerful influence as mothers and wives to safeguard the prevailing peace and harmony.

Her call comes as the country awaits the verdict of the Supreme Court on the election petition challenging the legitimacy of the 2012 Presidential Polls.

She said everything must be done to ensure that the peace and stability of the country was neither threatened nor disturbed.

Hajia Yasmeen was speaking at a day’s fun-fair held at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi by FOMWAG as part of the celebration of the Eid-ul-Fitr.

More than 2,000 children from Muslim communities across the region and their mothers thronged the place to be feted, have fun and recite the Holy Quran.

She said it must not be lost on anyone that in the event of confusion and violent clashes, women and children would be the worst affected, and that was why they had to lead the national peace campaign.

She also reminded Muslim parents to provide equal opportunity for the male and female child to pursue academic careers.

Hajia Rahmatu Sani, Regional Secretary of the Association, said FOMWAG should be represented on the National Hajj Board to effectively address problems faced by women making the pilgrimage.

The Association honoured the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Nestle Ghana, Akate Farms, Royal Bow and Iqra Foundation with citations for having consistently supported the annual fair over the past 22 years.
