Greening Ghana trees left to die

Abutia (V/R), May 30, GNA- Most of the 1000 tree seedlings planted at Abutia Kpota, in the Ho Municipal by Greening Ghana Initiative, an environmental non-governmental organization (NGO), in November last year, could not survive.

Madam Sitsofe Boateng, Assemblywoman of Abutia-Kloe, who took part in the exercise that herald the country's 50th Anniversary celebrations, told the GNA that she was worried about the situation and blamed it on poor timing of the project.

She also complained that incentive packages promised the volunteers who took part in the tree planting were not forthcoming and that might have demoralized the volunteers.

The Abutia community was expected to protect and nurture the tree seedlings into maturity especially as they were planted in the dry season.

They were planted at the time by 255 volunteers, under the auspices of Togbe Hotormaho Amedzake III, Asafohene of Abutia Kpota and supervised by forestry officials from the area. The Asafohene at the time urged the volunteers to ensure that tree seedlings grew into trees. The project tree planting exercise also covered Teti, Agorve, Kloe,Kpota and Agordeke communities in the area.
