Greater Accra NADMO Director stops illegal scrap business at Prampram beach

The Greater Accra National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Director, Hon. Archibold Cobbina has stormed the Prampram Golden Beach Resort at the Prampram district, in the Greater Accra to halt some illegal metal scrap business that has been going on on the Prampram Sea.

According to the Greater Accra NADMO Director, his action was in response to the call by the residents of prampram concerning some ships that has been abandoned in the sea and has become a threat to their lives.

"Arriving at the seashore with my team, I saw three abandoned ships on the sea which is a threat to the people of Prampram and Ghanaians as a whole", he stated.

"I quickly enquired from the owner of the Golden beach resort whether he knew something about the abandoned ships. Mr. Emmanuel Martey, the owner of the resort said he woke up one day only to find the abandoned ships on the sea. He said he was afraid so he immediately reported to the Tema Police Station" Archibold revealed.

"The Tema Police Commander came to assess the situation and mounted their surveillance to know the owners. Attempt by them and the Assembly to get the owners and questioned them proved futile", said Mr. Martey.

After noticing some people cutting parts of the ship at the beach, he approached them and stopped them from doing so.

After several enquiries, a young man by named as Richard Atiko owned revealed the ships belongs the owner of Kenkeh Company Limited located at Airport in Accra.

He said the owners couldn't dock their ships becasue Tema Daydock charges are high hence the need to rather cut.

Atiko further said the chiefs together with the Police Commander have appended their signature to a document giving him the permit to cut the vessel as scrap on the sea.

The activities of the scrap dealers have polluted the sea with a lot of metal particles on the sea which makes it dangerous for people to swim at Prampram Golden beach resort.

Hon. Archibold Cobbina demanded for a copy of the document on the agreement but the source (Atiko) was unable to produce the document.

Hon. Archibold called in the District Police Commander and reported the incident to them. The Police within the shortest time troop to the scene with their men and interrogated Atiko and his men.

The District Police commander Officer ordered for the truck and Atiko to be sent to the Police Station for further interrogation.

Assembly members in the Prampram district commended Archibold Cobbina for his rapid response to their call.
