Government asked not to privatise water

Tema, Aug 27, GNA- Speakers at a workers' forum in Tema, said on Thursday that water management should not be privatise and asked the Executive to find solutions to the problems facing the sector. Mr Seth Abloso, Liaison Officer at the Public Affairs Department of the Trades Union Congress, and Mr Adam Alhassan, Coordinating Secretary of the National Coalition Against Privatisation of Water, spoke on the topic: "Privatisation of Water in Ghana".

Mr Abloso said Government should not give in to demands for water privatization, since it had a duty to serve the interests of the people. "Ghana has a cream of qualified persons who can efficiently and effectively manage the water sector."

Mr Abloso suggested the need for Government to sign a performance contract with management of the Ghana Water Company Limited to ensure efficiency of services.

Mr Alhassan was of the opinion that "massive scandals" within the water sector were imminent due to efforts to privatize the sector. Mr Wilson Agana, Chairman of the Tema District Council of Labour, expressed the hope that Government would stall all efforts towards water privatization.
