Gomoa to get a new District

Ekwamkrom (C/R), Aug 25, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor has directed Mr Charles Bintim, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, to liase with the Electoral Commission (EC) to facilitate the creation of a new district in the Gomoa area.

Miss Joyce Aidoo, Gomoa District Chief Executive (DCE) who announced this said the President during his recent visit to the District confirmed that the District had met the constitutional requirement for the separation of the District into two. She was addressing a durbar of the Chiefs and people of Gomoa Ekwamkrom to mark their annual Akwambo Festival.

Miss Aidoo said the President stated that the last population census recorded over 200,000 people in the District and added that, for a District to be created the population should not be less than 75,000. The DCE appealed to the people not to make where should be the new District capital to create a problem for the government. Miss Aidoo advised parents to take advantage of the capitation for school fees to enrol their children.

Mr Richmond Sam Quarm, MP for Gomoa East, commended the people for their communal spirit, which enable them to rehabilitate and convert an abandoned pale latrine into a KVIP at a cost of 18 million cedis. Mr Edward Mintah, Assemblyman for the town, appealed to the citizens to pay their development levies of 20,000 cedis and 30,000 for resident females and males respectively and 50,000cedis for non-residents.
