Gomoa District votes 170 million cedis for scholarship

Gomoa Aboso (C/R), Aug 6, GNA - The Gomoa District Assembly has set aside five percent of its share of the Common Fund amounting to 170.3 million cedis for an Educational Fund.

Ms Joyce Aidoo, District Chief Executive, announced this at the joint open-day of the Aboso-Benso-Ekroful and Akropong Primary and JSS, at Gomoa Aboso.

She said the assembly spent 83 million cedis last year to sponsor 106 teacher trainees, 50 senior secondary school and 33 University and Polytechnic students.

The DCE said education was a priority of the district, adding that, 35 percent of the Assembly's budget went to the education sector. "We don't want to hear any school in Gomoa scoring zero or insignificant percentage at the Basic Education Certificate Examination BECE again," Ms Aidoo said.

She described most school blocks in the District as "dilapidated and dangerous" structures and said 65 had been either replaced, rehabilitated or being repaired.

The DCE cautioned pupils and students against anti-social vices including drug addiction, alcoholism and peer influence, which would lead them to their doom and failure.

Heads of institutions and teachers should be role models for their students to facilitate effective and efficient supervision to enhance teaching and learning.

Mr. Oscar Prah, Gomoa Aboso-Benso Circuit Supervisor of the Ghana Education Service, asked parents and guardians to ensure quality education for their children and wards.

They should also provide their school uniforms, fees, stationary and books to promote teaching and learning.

He expressed regrets that the Gomoa Akropong SDA Primary School held classes in a private house and appealed to the District Assembly and citizens of the area both in and outside the country for support to provide a structure for the school.
