Girl, 14, tops reading competition

Begoro (E/R), Jan 21, GNA - A 14-year-old student of the Begoro Mills Duodu Junior Secondary School, Miss Roberta Aryeetey, scored 79 marks to win the Fanteakwa District Reading and Writing Competition for JSS students at Begoro on Wednesday. Miss Aryeetey has thus qualified to represent the district at the Regional Reading and Writing Competition scheduled for February. Master Abdul Frempong of the Nsutam D/A JSS followed second with 62 marks and Miss Adobea Lily of Begoro Church of Christ JSS came third with 54 marks.

In all, 13 students drawn from the various circuits in the district participated in the competition.

In her closing remarks Ms Mary Animwah, the Fanteakwa District Director of Education, commended Miss Aryeetey and urged her to read wide to win the regional competition.

Ms Animwah urged teachers to encourage their pupils to speak English always in school and enforce the reading of story books to make them speak and write good English.

She deplored the habit of some teachers using the local language to teach and asked them to cease forthwith.
