'Ghanaians use Holy Saturday to purify environment'

Nii Lante Vanderpuije, Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, has urged residents of Eastern Region to observe the Easter season with a massive participation in the National Sanitation Day (NSD).

The region is hosting the exercise, which falls on Holy Saturday, April 4.

He made the call when he toured some municipal and districts assemblies in the region to urge residents and local government staff to take part in the fifth NSD exercise.

He toured East Akyem Municipality, Atiwa District, Birim North, Kwahu West and Kwawu South districts as well as the Afram Plains North and Afram Plains South districts.

Mr Vanderpuije admonished the residents to take the NSD exercise as their baby and endeavour to nurture it.

"Easter is a season for cleansing; we should therefore make conscientious effort to cleanse our physical surroundings as we do spiritually," he added.

Mr Vanderpuije said, apart from the NSD ensuring sound sanitation and good health, it also brings unity amongst individuals, factions and communities due to its communal nature.

He therefore called on Ghanaians to make the programme a success.
