Ghana needs new crop of teachers

The nation’s educational system needs a new breed of teachers with the requisite knowledge and skills to bring about transformation in schools.

Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, Vice Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), who made the call, said the educational institution has developed a programme to produce teachers, who would be able to effect change in schools.

He was speaking at the matriculation of 5,454 students, who were admitted by the University to undertake certificate, diploma, degree and post-graduate sandwich programmes.

Another batch of 3,851 students, who were not officially admitted last year, was also matriculated. Prof. Asabere-Ameyaw said some teachers took part in the sandwich during the vacation.

He said that all the campuses of the university were connected to a network with the internet, adding that 20 out of the 23 distance education centers had also been linked to UEW’s system.

The Registrar of the University, Mr Christopher Akwaa-Mensah, administered the matriculation oath to the fresh students.
