Ghana Shippers' Authority donates food supplies to Accra Psychiatric Hospital

The Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) on Thursday donated items worth GH?3,000 to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital to enable the medical facility meet its daily food supply demands.

Accra Psychiatric Hospital currently is faced with logistical constraints and some of the food suppliers had cut deliveries to the medical facility because the Hospital is unable to settle its indebtedness.

Mrs Joyce Bawa Mogtari, Head of the Legal Unit of the GSA told journalists at a short ceremony held in Accra that the donation formed part of the Authority’s annual thanksgiving contribution for 2012 to the medical facility to enable them meet some of the daily needs of the inmates.

“We have over the years observed with concern the constraints you encounter with respect to inadequate funding, poor medical facilities and lack of access to medication”, she said.

Mrs Mogtari expressed her admiration for the workers at the facility who worked under stressful conditions saying “men and women who work here have stayed committed and steadfast and continue to work tirelessly under very difficult and challenging conditions to cater for our brothers and sisters in this institution”.

Dr Akwasi Osei, Medical Director of Accra Psychiatric Hospital expressed appreciation to the management of GSA and urged other institutions to assist. He described the donation as “timely” and added that it would help “alleviate” the unfortunate situation the medical facility found itself.

The donated items included 10 bags of rice, three bags of beans, cooking oil, cartons of milk, bundles of toilet rolls and detergents.

The GSA has been at the frontline of Ghana’s maritime industry since its establishment in 1974.

It had over the years collaborated with private and public organizations in the maritime industry to pursue its primary objective of protecting and promoting the interests of Ghanaian shippers in relation to port, ship and inland transport problems in order to ensure safe, reliable and cost effective cargo handling.

The GSA operates under the ministerial responsibility of the Ministry of Transport.
