Ghana Insurers Association steps in to boost sanitation efforts in Accra Municipality

The Ghana Insurers Association (GIA) has extended support to the Ayawaso East Municipality in the Greater Accra Region by donating items worth thousands of Ghana cedis. The donation, which includes two tricycles, is expected to play a significant role in tackling the municipality’s sanitation challenges.

Abdul Ganiyu Ibrahim, the Municipal Chief Executive, expressed gratitude to the GIA for the timely gesture, stating that the municipality is currently struggling to maintain clean frontages and drainage systems. The donated tricycles, he noted, will be valuable assets in promoting a cleaner environment.

He further highlighted the municipality’s ongoing efforts to improve sanitation, including stakeholder engagements, clean-up exercises, and public education campaigns. These initiatives aim to strengthen waste management, reduce health risks, and enhance the quality of life for residents.

Accra continues to grapple with major waste management issues due to rapid urbanisation, population growth, and insufficient infrastructure. These challenges have contributed to environmental degradation, pollution, and public health hazards.

As part of its corporate social responsibility and to mark the 2025 Insurance Awareness Month celebrations, the GIA extended its support to the communities in which it operates. The donation is part of a broader effort to address indiscriminate dumping, littering, and poor waste collection systems in the capital.

Mercy Naa Koshie Boampong, a GIA Board Member and CEO of Serene Insurance Company Ltd., also stressed the need to educate the public on their rights and responsibilities when dealing with insurance companies.

She noted that a key issue in the industry is not necessarily a lack of trust, but a lack of awareness, particularly when it comes to claims processes.

To address this, the GIA has dedicated a portion of Insurance Awareness Month to public education, aiming to empower Ghanaians with knowledge on how insurance works and how to engage effectively with insurers.
