Ga South MCE warns against illegal evacuation of people

Weija, April 7, GNA- The Municipal Chief Executive Officer of the Ga South, Mr. Sheriff Nii Otto Dodoo on Wednesday appealed to the Awutu-Senya District Assembly in the Central Region not to forcefully eject people at the common border of the two Assemblies. The Ga South wanted to adopt legal and diplomatic means of resolving the problem, he said and asked the sister Assembly not to derail the effort.

In a meeting with Assembly Members at Weija, Mr. Dodoo pledged to explore all legal means possible to resist any incursions into territories belonging to the Ga South Municipal Assembly. "A team comprising the Presiding member, the MCE, Director of Town and Planning Department, the Municipal Engineer will call on the Greater Accra Regional Minister to find an early resolution", he added. Mr. Otto Dodoo also cautioned contractors not to delay the completion of their projects or face the abrogation of such contracts. He mentioned the Gbawe six-unit classroom block, the Gbawe Lafa Police building, Chantan three-Unit classroom block and the Domeabra three- unit classroom block as those which had not been completed due to the delay by the contractors.

He hinted that the Assembly had disbursed the second tranche of Mobilization Fund for community mobilization activities in the Electoral Areas, through the Zonal Councils adding that the third tranche would be sent to the councils by the end of the month. He bemoaned the poor road network in the Municipality and said a length of 230 kilometres of urban roads had been awarded for grading works at a total sum of 630, 725.44 Ghana cedis, which would be sourced from the Road Fund. "The Assembly has also allocated 94,200.00 Ghana cedis to support road works that are not covered by the Department of Urban programme for the year 2010", he added. He said the Assembly in collaboration with the security agencies would demolish unauthorized structures on government lands and on waterways.

The exercise, Mr. Dodoo said, would cover over 170 structures including residential houses. "Some of the areas to be affected include the Institute of Technical Supervision site, Odorgonno School site, Christian Methodist School site, the Tuba Irrigation land at Kasoa, the Broadcasting lands, Mile Eleven cemetery lands and the Weija Dam site", he said. The MCE accused the Accra Metropolitan Assembly for dumping refuse at Ablekuma-Nsumfa when the necessary negotiations for the acquisition of the land from the Ga South Municipal Assembly had not been completed. Madam Shirley Ayokor Botwe, Member of Parliament for Weija, appealed to the Assembly to endeavour to execute projects it had outlined for the year. 7 April 10
