GRRTU calls for dismissal of convicted officials

The Association of Locals- Branch Unions of Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of Trades Union Congress, have resolved to remove four convicted national officers from office.

A resolution signed by 15 members of the union, listed the convicted members as Alhaji Yaw Manu; Kumasi, Kwame Kumah ;Cape Coast, Benjamin Kwesi Ansah; Takoradi, and Stephen K. Okudzeto; Accra.

They said the judgement delivered by a Commercial Court of Justice, Sekondi; Western Region, on May 22 May, and on the 8th day of June 2012, by Justice Nicholas C.A. Agbevor J; convicted and sentenced the above officers to one day imprisonment with a cost of GH?,1000 in favour of the applicant against the respondents.

“That, by the evidence of their conviction, and in accordance with Article 13(h) of the Constitution of our Union, promulgated at Tamale Government Senior High School on the 13th of September, 2011; which states thus;

“Any member of the Union who has been convicted on criminal offence shall be disqualified from contesting election. If the fact of the criminality is established after election, such person(s) shall automatically be removed from office and a report made to the appropriate level of authority.

“That, again, the four (4) officers used their positions in the Union to prevent the National Executive Council, the 2nd highest decision-making body of the Union after Congress to enforce this Constitutional demand to have them removed from office in accordance with Article 13(h).

“That, the refusal of the four (4) officers to comply with the Constitutional demand constituted subversion of Article 13(h).

“That, Article 40 of the Constitution, which states that;

“The Union can caution, withhold loading right, fine, suspend, dismiss, or expel an Officer, a member, or group of members, or Officers, who subvert any portion or portions of this Constitution, or found guilty of misconduct, such members membership cards shall be withdrawn.”

The resolution said: “We the undersigned Union members, acting on the authority of Article 13(h) and Article (40) of our Union Constitution, resolve, and it is hereby resolved, that the four (4) affected National Officers are disqualified to hold any office of the Union and thereby removing them from office they are currently occupying immediately.

“In furtherance to that, that each of the officers surrenders any Union property or properties in their possession to the National Secretariat of the Union immediately.

“That, full investigation shall be conducted into the whereabouts of various monies collected from Union members and some individuals in the name of the Union as deposit for buses they failed to supply, and how buses supplied to the Union are distributed among the Regions to Union members.

“Be it therefore known that, by this letter, the said national officers have been removed from office with immediate effect.”

The resolution was signed by: Isaac Ahumah Kubi – Teshie Nungua East Chairman, Akwesi Tandor – Teshie Nungua East Vice, Nii Gbese Kpakpo – Nungua Branch Vice, Nii Aryee Isaac – Nungua Branch 1st Trustee, Ben Clottey – Salaga-M-Branch, Dayibu Mohammed – Accra Newtown Branch, S.K. Atitsogbui– Accra Newtown Branch Chairman and Kwame Somiah – Lashibi Branch Chairman.

The rest are: Sarpong O. Frank – Lashibi Branch Executive, Nartey Stephen K. Ashaiman Highway, Ben Lawson – Teshie Branch, Lucky Largom – Teshie Branch, Francis Kugblenu – Accra-Ho, Samuel Asante – Accra - Ho, Isaac Andoh – Accra-Koforidua and John W. Ayitevie – Ashaiman Highway.
