The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has condemned an alleged youth attack on the Northern Regional Hospital—formerly the Tamale Central Hospital—locking up administrative offices and barricading the Out-Patients Department in what the association describes as a reckless and dangerous act.

In a statement on Wednesday, November 19, the association said it had taken note of a viral video circulating on social media showing the group besieging the hospital premises, including the office of the Medical Director and other key administrative spaces.

The GMA warned that such actions jeopardise the lives of both patients and health workers and also threaten the security of hospital property.

According to the association, the growing trend of youth groups invading health facilities to address grievances outside of the laid-down public service procedures poses a significant risk to health service delivery.

It stressed that these confrontational tactics undermine order and safety, noting that there are clear mechanisms for resolving disputes within the health sector.

The GMA has therefore called on the Ghana Police Service to immediately apprehend those involved in the incident. It also urged traditional leaders to intervene and help restore calm while ensuring that any legitimate concerns are addressed through the appropriate channels.

The association further requested that the Ghana Health Service (GHS) provide immediate protection for the Medical Director and all staff at the facility while ongoing issues are resolved.

The GMA said it is monitoring developments closely and may take further action should threats to the safety of doctors and other health workers continue.
