Funsi SHS appeals for support

The Funsi Senior High School in the Wa East District of the Upper West Region has appealed for a dining hall and kitchen as dining takes place in an open summer hut and cooking was done in the open.

Mr Moses Jotie, Assistant Head Master of the school, said the situation was worrying because the practice was unhygienic especially during the harmattan which came with dust and which was a health hazard.

Mr Jotie made this known when Mr Ameenu Salifu, Member of Parliament for Wa East, Mr Abdul Karim Abudu, District Chief Executive and Mr Evans Kpebah, District Director of Education paid a working visit to the school at the weekend to acquaint themselves with the challenges there.

Mr Jotie said the school, with a student population of 426, comprising 212 boys and 214 girls, was challenged with inadequate teaching staff, classrooms, library, textbooks, teachers bungalows and a school bus to enhance effective teaching and learning.

On accommodation, Mr Jotie said three teachers’ bungalows which had been under construction for some years now had only one completed and housing 10 teachers instead of three.

The school authorities had also converted the administration block to accommodate the girls and carry out the administrative work at the headmaster’s bungalow.

Mr Salifu assured the teaching staff and students that he would work assiduously to address some of the concerns and appealed to the students to learn hard and should not let the situation discourage them from achieving their dreams.

He said a new community senior high school would be established at Logu.

Master Badung Bernard Baafadei, Senior Prefect of the school, told the Member of Parliament that the school suffered erratic water supply and that was impacting negatively on their studies.

He said the only classroom block was uncompleted and the walls and ground floor not cemented while its doors and windows were bare with no electricity.

Master Baafadei appealed to the authorities to prevail on the contractor to complete work on the block to create an enabling environment for quality teaching and learning.

He called on government and other benevolent organisations to come to the aid of the school by providing it with a library, ICT centre and wireless connection, as well as first aid box, marker boards, entertainment hall and adequate water supply.
