Four pupils die in a fish pond

Humigyibre (W/R), June 22, GNA - Four pupils of the Sefwi-Humigyibre Primary School drowned while swimming in a pond at Muoho near Humigyibre.

The deceased, identified as Augustine Atta, 12, Enoch Danso, 14, Oscar Agyabeng, 12, and Patrick Ofori, 15, are said to have gone to the pond in the company of other friends to swim after close of school on June 11.

A family spokesman, Mr Abraham Appiah-Kubi, told the Ghana News Agency that the pupils trekked from Muoho to nearby Humigyibre to attend school and sometimes swim in the pond created by a quarry works belonging to Interbeton Company.

He said the deceased got drowned moments after they had jumped into the pond and that divers were hired from Sefwi-Ankwaaso to retrieve the bodies which were later deposited at the Sefwi-Wiawso Government Hospital mortuary. Mr Moses Kofi Armah, the District Chief Executive for Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai, expressed condolence to the bereaved families and appealed to mining and quarry companies to cover trenches they dig in the course of their operations.
