Techiman, Aug 6, GNA- Techiman and Sunyani Districts and two others in the Central Region have been selected to benefit from the Waste Management Project of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.

Those in the Central Region are Agona-Swedru and Elmina. Under the project, private participation in waste management will be introduced to complement district assemblies' management of waste. Mr Issifu Abdul-Karim, Techiman District Environmental Health Officer, said this after a clean-up exercise at Wangara-Line by Techiman-Zongo Kroye-kuo whose members cleaned gutters and removed heaps of refuse.

Mr Abdul-Karim said the commercial status of Techiman posed a threat to the environment and lauded local government projects that would help address waste management and sanitation. He said Techiman District led in typhoid cases in the Brong Ahafo Region and attributed the situation to poor sanitation and environmental pollution.

Mr George Adu-Kaakyire, Assemblyman in the area commended members of the Kroye-Kuo and urged them to make it a regular affair to enable the community to win an environmental cleanliness award instituted by the Techiman District Assembly.
