Follow Roadmap document to sustain peace in Dagbon - Commander

Tamale, Dec. 23, (Pobia), GNA - The Commanding Officer of the Sixth Infantry Battalion in Tamale, Col. Omane Agyekum has called on all stakeholders in the Dagbon chieftaincy dispute to ensure that the "Roadmap to Peace Document" works to sustain peace in the area. He said all parties involved in the peace process should be patient, exercise restraint and show commitment towards the Roadmap.

Col. Agyekum made the call at the unit's edition of the West African Soldiers Social Activity (WASSA) in Tamale on Friday. He urged the people of Dagbon, especially the youth to exercise greater restraint and not to allow themselves to be misused. He said: The future of Dagbon is in the hands of the youth and what you do today will determine what Dagbon will be tomorrow". Col. Agyekum advised them to use their youthful strength to mobilise and reconcile the people to move Dagbon forward and not to keep it at a standstill or destroy it. He assured the people in the Northern Region that the security personnel would not shun their responsibility to allow any person or a group of persons take the law into hands to create confusion. He however, pointed out even though the security personnel would always ensure that the region was stable and secured at all cost, it was the responsibility of each and everyone to work towards the sustainability of peace in the region.

The Commanding Officer commended the security agencies in the region for the professional manner they provided security for the burial of the late Ya-Naa, Yakubu Andani II, the enskinment of his regent and the maintenance of law and order in Tamale and Yendi. He also commended chiefs, opinion leaders and other stakeholders for playing their roles well and making it possible to achieve peace in the area. Col. Agyekum said the insurgence of armed robbery was still a concern for all the people in the region and gave the assurance that his unit would continue to work jointly with the personnel of the Ghana Police Service through the "Operation Calm Life" to clamp down on them. Mr. Charles Abass, Northern Regional Coordinating Director appealed to the personnel of the security agencies not to loose sight of other pockets of potential conflict areas in the region.
