Fire destroys Amaniampong SHS Boys' dormitory

Mampong (Ash), Jan. 25, GNA - Fire on Monday night razed through the boys' dormitory of the Amaniampong Senior High School at Asante-Mampong causing extensive damage to property. Mattresses, clothing, chop boxes, trunks and books of 138 students got burnt. No one was, however, hurt as the students were on evening prep, when the fire started at about 1940 hours. It took personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service more than two hours to put out the raging fire. The cause of the fire is yet to be established but it is widely suspected to have been due to an electrical fault. The Headmaster, Mr Thomas Alexander Aboagye, told the Ghana News Agenc= y that the affected students would likely be sent home for about a week to overcome the trauma. The school would make up for the lost time by offering them special tuition. The dormitory block, now in ruins, was initially built to house rabbit= s and pigs but was turned into students' accommodation because of overcrowd= ing in the school. The Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Daniel Appau Ohyeamang, and the Asante-Mampong Traditional Council visited the school to assess the extent of the damage. Mr Ohyeamang said he would ensure that a new dormitory would be constructed to provide a decent accommodation for the students. He advised the students to desist from activities that could result in fire outbreaks.
