A somber mood has fallen over Akwatia following a tragic motorcycle accident that claimed the life of a young man, believed to be in his 30s, late Monday evening on September 1, 2025.
The incident occurred near the Akwatia funeral grounds, close to the Akwatia Roman Church, just a day before the community is set to cast its votes in a crucial by-election.
Eyewitnesses, speaking to Ghanaweb journalist Eric Obeng Boateng, described a harrowing scene involving two young men on separate motorcycles, reportedly traveling at dangerously high speeds.
It is widely believed that the duo was engaged in a race, vying to prove who was the superior rider.
According to a witness account, the two bikers attempted a perilous overtaking maneuver.
As an incoming car approached, they allegedly tried to pass a parked vehicle simultaneously.
The extreme speed at which they were traveling proved fatal for one of the riders, who lost control and was thrown from his motorcycle, sustaining injuries that led to his immediate death.
The second rider, whose identity also remains unknown, reportedly fled the scene immediately after the accident and has not been seen since.
"They were going very fast, like they were racing," one eyewitness recounted to Ghanaweb.
"Then, with a car coming towards them, they both tried to pass a parked car at the same time. One just landed on the floor and that was it. The other one just rode off."
The deceased, whose identity is yet to be established, has been transported to a local mortuary. Authorities are currently working to identify the young man and locate his family members to inform them of the tragedy.
The accident has cast a shadow over the town, which was otherwise buzzing with preparations for today's by-election.
