Farmers urged to embrace new techniques

Mr. Emmanuel Sky Ganaku, Adaklu District Chief Executive, has appealed to farmers in the Adaklu District to embrace new techniques and technologies for higher yields.

He said this at this year’s district farmer’s day celebration at Adaklu Sofa.

The theme for the day across the country was “Eat What You Grow”.

The DCE also urged farmers to add value to their farm produce by processing them to improve their incomes.

He said the government was trying its best to make agriculture attractive through input subsidies, soft loans and programmes targeted at the youth.

Mr. Ganaku said the district’s 706- kilometer square land space had stretches of undeveloped arable lands.

He called on the farmers to manage water bodies prudently and also desist from indiscriminate bush burning.

The DCE said “the assembly will not sit unconcerned and see miscreants bring havoc to the environment but will deal severely with anybody caught according to the laws of the land”.

Mr. Victor Atsakpo, Adaklu District Director of Agriculture said there was an urgent need for the training of farmers to understand the relative value of investment risks and returns in the whole chain of production.

Togbe Katani V, Chief of Adaklu Sofa, said due to the poor road network in the district, non-availability of processing plants and ready markets, about 60 percent of perishable crops were lost and appealed for the improvement of the roads in the area.

Mr. Kennedy Badagbor, 46, of Aziedukope was adjudged the overall best district farmer and was presented with a motorbike, a knapsack, two pairs of wellington boots, cutlasses, soap and a certificate.
