Fanteakwa introduces new measures to improve performance

Nteso(ER), Oct. 16, GNA - Fanteakwa District Directorate of Education has instituted measures to improve comprehension and communication skills of students to enable them perform better at the Basic Education Certificate Examination(BECE). The measures include reading and spelling "B" competition to be organised in schools every fortnight and at the district level every quarter of the year.

Ms Mary Animwah, Fanteakwa District Director of Education, announced this at schools performance appraisal meeting (SPAM)held at Nteso .

She expressed concern about the poor performance of students at this year's BECE and explained that the students failed the examination because of their inability to read and understand the questions. Ms Animwah advised parents to purchase reading books for their children instead of confectionery.

The headmasters said students in the district performed well in examinations when questions were read to them but performed poorly when the same questions were given to them to answer independently. Parents complained about 'wholesale' promotion in schools that had affected the performance of students and appealed to Ghana Education Service to review the decision. 16 Oct. 07
