Fante youth commend Mahama for Komenda Sugar Factory revival

A pressure group made up of Fante youth across the Central Region, Coalition of Fante Youth (COFY), has expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for honouring his promise of reviving the Komenda Sugar Factory which collapsed in the 1960s.

According to them, their gratitude stems from the fact that the revival of the factory will boost the fortunes of the region as well as create numerous job opportunities for the youth in the region.

In a press release signed by spokespersons of the Coalition, Okyeremaba Nana Kweigya, Akosua Ofosua and Ekow Benford Coker, the group called on all sons and daughters of the Fanteland sojourning away from home in search of jobs to return and take advantage of the opportunity offered by the president to help contribute their quota in reviving the economy of the deprived region.

They, however, appealed to the president to consider reviving the defunct Saltpond Ceramics factory and the Pomadze Poultry Farm.

The above factories, in their estimation, will nail the coffin of unemployment in the region.

“We have faith in the President that by virtue of the job done on the Komenda Sugar Factory; he can also revamp the above defunct factories,” they stated.
Meanwhile, the leadership and members of the Central Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed appreciation to the president for his resolve to revitalise defunct factories in the country.

In another release signed by the Regional Communications Director of the party, Mr Kwesi Dawood, he pointed out that the move was in the right direction as it will create employment opportunities for the teeming youth to enable them embrace the future with hope and confidence.

The communications director observed that the revamping of the sugar factory at Komenda will completely change the economic status of the region as it will open up job avenues in sugarcane farming for the inhabitants.

He added that a new breeze of life has been released in the country in line with the president’s vision of changing lives and transforming Ghana because of the benefit the bye-products from the sugar factory will have not only on the region but the entire country.

He stated that the factory will reduce sugar import bill by US$ 300 million annually and stimulate a healthy competition in the global arena in the area of trade.

He also assured the president of the region’s decision to safeguard the factory in appreciation of his commitment and efforts at transforming the region.
