Professor Yarhands Dissou Arthur, the Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Mathematics Education (FASME) at the University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (USTED), has observed what he calls 'excessive hunger' among students in the tertiary institutions.

According to the university don, aside from academic burdens, hunger is preventing many students from learning effectively and performing well in their examinations.

“The reality on our campuses is that many students go to class hungry. This affects their learning, health and overall wellbeing. Government must take decisive action to curb student hunger," Professor Arthur noted.

"There are many students struggling to afford even one decent meal a day. Government must take deliberate steps to address it in our universities. It must be a national policy,” he stated.

He suggested during a food donation exercise organised by the TEIN USTED Chapter that the government should establish a Campus Food Bank system.

“I'll personally present a proposal to my VC to pilot this initiative on campus. If it works here, we can use it as a model for other public universities to curb student hunger," Prof. Arthur exclusively told reporter Kwabena Danso-Dapaah on the USTED campus.

TEIN members received 5kg bags of rice, cooking oil, milk, Lala Cake and other essential items.

Prof. Arthur, who happens to be the patron of TEIN USTED, expressed gratitude on behalf of the beneficiaries, saying the support came at a critical time amid rising cost of living.
