Eight boreholes for Sunyani

The African Assistance Plan (AAP), a Christian Non-Governmental Organisation, NGO, has constructed eight mechanized boreholes for some selected communities in Sunyani Municipality.

The cost of the boreholes at Asikasu, Bungolo, Adwenasu, Abotareye, Ampehia, Ansen, Nyamebekyere-Domfete and Yeboakrom is $16,000 US dollars and 2,000 residents are the beneficiaries.

Mrs Rose Meda Otoo, Director of Programmes, AAP, said this when she took Dr Victor Madziakapita, Regional Vice President for Africa Service Center of Living Water International round the facilities on Wednesday.

Dr Madziakapita is on a seven-day assessment visit in Brong-Ahafo to ascertain the operations of the APP in the communities.

Mrs Otoo explained that the Christian NGO was working to ensure that people in deprived areas had access to potable drinking water.

She said the APP had targeted that by the end of 2017 more than three million people in deprived communities in Ashanti, Brong-Ahafo, Western and Northern regions would access potable drinking water.

Mrs Otoo said, this year the NGO has targeted to rehabilitate 47 existing boreholes in Brong-Ahafo and Western regions, 90 in Northern and will construct seven new ones in Ashanti region.

Dr. Madziakapita said he was impressed with work of the APP and expressed the optimism that relationship between the two NGOs would be strengthened.

He expressed concern that the water system in Africa was very worrisome since majority of people on the continent could not have access to potable drinking water, with some relying on streams and rivers.

Dr Madziakapita said his NGO was working in 16 countries in Africa to help improve the water situation but added it was also working closely with AAP to extend its activities to include sanitation in Ghana.**
