Effutu Municipal Assembly to uproot Sakawa

Gyahadze (C/R), June 17, GNA - The Effutu Municipal Assembly, has vowed to fight cyber fraud, popularly called "Sakawa" and order under-hand dealings in the Municipality and appealed to the people to report the perpetrators of these crimes to the law enforcement agencies.

Nii Ephraim, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), gave the promise during the local celebration of African Union's Day of the African Child, which was organised by the Awutu Bawjiase Programme Area branch of Plan Ghana, a non-governmental organisation. He said the 'get-rich-quick' attitude of some Ghanaians posed a serious national challenge, which called for collaborative efforts to nip it in the bud.

Nii Ephraim said sakawa was destroying the moral fibre of the youth who constitute the window of hope for the nation's future. The MCE charged parents and guardians to exercise effective supervisory control over their children, especially the girl- child, to reduce the incidence of teenage pregnancy, which is destroying the educational pursuit of the victims.

He cautioned male teachers who sexually abuse their students to stop such irresponsible acts since it undermines the integrity and ethics of the teaching profession.

Nii Ephraim said his administration had put in place mechanism to promote the aims and objectives of basic education and advice pupils in the district to pursue their education vigorously. Obarima Heittey III, Chief of Gyahadze and Gyasehene (sub-chief) of the Effutu Traditional Area, expressed concern about the indiscipline behaviour of some male teachers, whose sexual exploits with students leads to unwanted pregnancies. Osabarima Heittey said within the past few months, a teacher whose name he did not disclosed had impregnated four pupils while all efforts to get the teacher to be prosecuted had proved futile.
